A True Winter Wonderland: The Elusive Hoar Frost

About a week ago, we had a hoar frost here in northern Idaho. When you see one you can't mistake it for anything else. It is quite magical. The pictures on this entry are actually from a few years ago when I saw a hoarfrost on the farm I lived on. It was the most intense hoar frost I've ever seen.

The science behind them is pretty basic.
Still air + high humidity + low temperatures = intricate ice crystals forming on surfaces.
But seeing a hoarfrost is a magical experience. You are immediately transported to a winter wonderland where you can imagine seeing little elves hiding among the crystal structures.
Or just imagine you have walked through the back of the wardrobe and are now in Narnia. I dig science but I do love a good imagination and fantasy every so often. I'll keep my eye out for other fascinating winter weather.

  1. Lovely - it was my first time seeing it too - and Narnia is exactly where I felt like I was :D
