In the News: They are only mostly dead!

An awesome collection of images of no-longer-extinct-animals is at this website. Apparently there are a fair number of wild critters that were once thought to be long extinct and then are miraculously discovered alive today. This photo is of a Takahe, a flightless bird from New Zealand. It was declared extinct in 1898 and discovered alive in 1948.

One of  the coolest critters was thought to have gone extinct 11 million years ago but was recently found alive. It is a tiny marsupial the size of a mouse. And I was thrilled to see that a local critter made their top 13 list. The Giant Palouse Earthworm can get up to 3 feet long and burrow up to 15 feet underground. When you handle it, it exudes an odor that smells like lilies. Very cool! Read more about that critter here.
